A “breast biopsy” is a test that removes tissue or fluid from the suspicious area. The already removed cells are examined using a microscope and also further tested to check for the presence of possible breast cancer. Biopsy is the only diagnostic procedure that is 100% sure and it can definitely determine if the suspicious area is cancerous.

The good news is that 70 – 80% of the women who have a breast biopsy, do not have breast cancer. Our team of professionals can provide you the best technological level for painless and safe biopsies of the breast, with the most modern techniques of minimally invasive surgery.

There are three types of breast biopsies:

  • Surgical biopsy
  • Core-needle biopsy
  • Fine-needle aspiration

The first two are the most common biopsies. There are several factors that help your doctor decide which type of biopsy is best for you. It can include the appearance, location and the size of the suspicious area on the breast.

Once your biopsy is complete, a specialist called a pathologist, examines the tissue or the fluid samples using a microscope, looking for some abnormal or cancerous cells. The report from pathology, which can take up to two weeks to complete, is sent to the primary/family doctor. It indicates whether the suspicious area is cancerous and provides a better picture of your current situation. You and your doctor will go over the report, if necessary, discuss possible treatment options.

If no cancer cells are found, the report will point that the cells in the lump are benign, (meaning non-cancerous). But, some type of follow-up or treatment may still be needed, as recommended by the professional.

If cancer cells are found, the report will give you more information to help determine the very next steps.
