A hematologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the blood and all the organs involved in its creation. Hematology is a branch of medicine that deals with the pathology, physiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of blood related disorders.

Hematologists treat diseases that are associated with the three types of blood cells: erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets.

Blood diseases can develop throughout one’s lifetime or be congenital. The latter type usually has a poor prognosis. Usually the disease is of a certain cell type, but in rare cases, all blood cells are affected. Some diseases also involved such organs as the spleen, bone marrow, liver, thymus and lymph nodes, which all take part in the blood creation and circulation.

The most common diseases are anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, hemophilia, thrombocytopenia, neutrophils, agranulocytosis etc.

Hematologists work in different environments, including pathology, blood banks, laboratories and private clinics. Specialists in this division can also choose to focus on specific topics within the field of hematology, such as lymphatic organs and bone marrow and may diagnose blood count anomaly or platelet anomaly.

Should you have any concerning symptoms, you will consult your primary physician. Based on some preliminary tests and your medical history, you will be referred to a Hematologist. Possible symptoms of a hematological disorder include:

  • pale skin
  • fatigue
  • loss of concentration
  • loss of appetite
  • drop in active immunity
  • increased bleeding and longer time to stop it
  • bruising
  • hematomas
  • swollen lymph nodes
